SOWAL Jazz Fest welcomes an extraordinary meeting of jazz history as Bobby Watson and Curtis Lundy headline SOWAL House with an all star quartet. These are musicians who helped shape the sound of modern straight ahead jazz.

Multi GRAMMY nominated alto saxophonist Bobby Watson emerged as musical director of Art Blakey’s legendary Jazz Messengers, one of the most important proving grounds in jazz history. During his four year tenure with Blakey, Watson appeared on 14 Jazz Messengers recordings, more than any other musician in the group’s storied history. His career has since included work with Max Roach, George Coleman, Wynton Marsalis, Dianne Reeves and countless others, along with nearly 30 albums as a leader.

Curtis Lundy is one of the great acoustic bassists of his generation. A GRAMMY nominated bassist, composer and arranger, Lundy rose to prominence anchoring the band of the incomparable Betty Carter and went on to perform with artists including Dizzy Gillespie, Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson, Pharoah Sanders and Bobby Hutcherson.

Watson and Lundy also share a musical history that stretches back decades. Together they helped establish Horizon, the celebrated group that carried the hard bop tradition forward with a modern voice and recorded acclaimed albums for Blue Note and Columbia Records.

Now they reunite at SOWAL House for SOWAL Jazz Fest, leading a quartet in the kind of room where this music is meant to be heard: intimate, close to the musicians, with every conversation between saxophone and bass happening just a few feet away.

This is a rare opportunity to experience two musicians who have spent their lives inside the lineage of jazz, together on one of the smallest stages they will play.
